Surfing the Skeleton Coast

Namibia’s Skeleton Coast is named for the whale bones and shipwrecks that litter its shores. It is a hostile, haunted place where the Namib Desert crashes directly into the freezing Atlantic. It is also home to some of the longest, fastest lefthand point breaks on the planet. Getting there is half the battle. We drove 4x4s through deep sand tracks, navigating by GPS and instinct. The fog rolls in thick off the ocean, obscuring the horizon until the waves are right upon you. The water is terrifyingly cold, teeming with seals and sharks. But when you see the wave—a mechanical, endless wall of water peeling for over a kilometer—fear is replaced by adrenaline. Riding a wave here feels like surfing on the edge of the world. To your left, endless dunes. To your right, the open Atlantic. And under your feet, the raw power of nature uncensored. It’s not a surf trip for the faint of heart, but the reward is a ride you will replay in your mind for the rest of your life.
